A Few Small Moments

These short stories are set in the surgical service of a major teaching hospital. Each story explores a "few small moments" in the intimate space in which surgeon and patient, surgeon and colleague, or professor and student come together. The 18 stories provide a loose narrative if read in the order printed. Read individually, each provides privileged glimpses into the surgical life. The book concludes with a section for students interested in pursuing a career in surgery. A short glossary of medical terms rounds out the book.

Breast Surgical Techniques and Interdisciplinary Management

The management of breast problems - from diagnosis through treatment - has become extremely complex. Modern treatment stresses interdisciplinary teamwork. Frustrated with existing texts, I edited this book with Dr Frederick M Dirbas. The book features 86 chapters by an international panel of experts.

This text includes 109 chapters, each devoted to the surgical anatomy of a single operative procedure. Safe technique and anatomic pitfalls are stressed throughout. I stated in the Preface to the First Edition that this extensively illustrated text was "developed to provide a concise reference to the relevant operative anatomy of procedures encountered by most general surgery residents." The book has attained a steady following. 

The SAGES Manual: Fundamentals of Laparoscopy and GI Endoscopy

This compact 840 page softcover text contains details on a wide spectrum of laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures. Each chapter is written by an expert in the field. The manual is organized in an easy-to-use outline format and lavishly illustrated. It was sponsored by SAGES, the premier surgical organization in the field, and I was privileged to serve as editor.

As I stated in the Preface, "Think of it as a way to take SAGES experts with you, in your pocket, your briefcase, or your OR locker."

The first edition was a best-seller. The book has been translated into multiple languages and is now in its third edition.

Chassin's Operative Strategy in General Surgery. An Expositive Atlas.

Jameson Chassin, the author of the first two editiors, taught me when I was a surgical resident. It was such an honor to be selected to edit the third edition when he retired. This is a classic text which features strategic thinking - specifically safe ways to do operations and avoid complications.

The text has been translated into multiple languages. I have been privileged to carry forward Dr Chassin's tradition in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th editions. I enlisted several skilled coeditors for the fifth edition, and hope that they will carry the book forward.

Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery

The third edition of this compact paperback contains template operative dictations for all of the general surgical procedures that a general surgeon or surgical resident in training is likely to do. It is the first volume in a new series edited by Dr Hoballah, entited "Operative Dictations Made Simple".
